 Week 11: What Jo Did

 1 basketball (n.): a game played by two teams of five players who score points by throwing a large ball through an open net hanging from a metal ring 

 2 whopping (adj.): very large, impressive 

 3 height (n.): a measurement of how tall a person or thing is 

 4 backboard (n.): the board behind the basket or another object 

 5 dribble (v.): to move a ball by bouncing it 

 6 nervously (adv.): showing feelings of being worried and afraid about what might happen

 7 puzzled (adj.): showing confusion because something is difficult to understand

 8 embarrassment (n.): the feeling of being foolish in front of others

 9 encourage (v.): to make someone feel more confident or hopeful

 10 demonstrate (v.): to show examples of it by doing it 

 11 dunk (v.): to jump high in the air and push the ball down through the basketball net 

 12 disgust (n.): a strong feeling of dislike for something that has a very unpleasant appearance, taste, or smell 

 13 congratulate (v.): to tell someone that you are happy because of his or her success or good luck

 14 apologize (v.): to tell someone that you are sorry for having done something wrong 

 15 nickname (n.): a name that is different from your real name but is what your family or friends call you 

 16 receive (v.) : to get something from another person 

 17 block (v.) : to stop others from doing something like scoring points or hitting

 18 amaze (v.) : to feel impressed or in awe of someone or an action 

 19 arc (v.) : to move in a curved way

 20 defense (n.) : the people responsible for protecting their group or team from losing or getting hurt

 21 slam (v.) : to throw the ball or hit with a lot of force 

 22 jam (v.) : to squeeze or pack in tightly; can be similar to slam 

 23 pay attention (phr.): to focus or concentrate on something 

 24 curious (adj.) : to want to know more about someone or something 

 25 half-court (n.) : the line that divides the middle of a basketball court 

 26 straight (adj.) : not curved or bent 

 27 impossible (adj.) : something that has zero chance of happening 

 28 froze (v.) : to stop moving; past tense of freeze

 29 high-five (v.): to use your hand to make contact with other person’s hand in a clap like motion to congratulate them 

 30 whisper (v.) : to say something very quietly
